"I was in a surrender moment of whatever happens will be great," she said after her win. "The absolute destination for me was the journey. The journey was the gift. It's a great gift to be part of a show that gives people so much joy. And that's really what I think dancing does."
The 50-year-old actress later took to Twitter to congratulate her fans for their support.
"Can barely type, but MUST thank partner Derek Hough, my amazing husband and daughter and every single person who voted for us on DWTS. Yay!" Grey Tweeted. "Headed to NY w fam and finalists. Dancing this am on GMA and The View, then going to sleep for several months."
In the end, Massey came in second place, while this season's biggest headline-maker, Palin, took home the bronze.
Palin said that while she didn't expect to win, she longed to, because a victory "would be like a big middle finger to all the people out there that hate my mom and hate me."
Burlesque star Christina Aguilera performed, while other season 11 contestants such as David Hasselhoff, Rick Fox, Kurt Warner and Brandy also took the stage for one last time. Other former contestants in attendance were Margaret Cho, Florence Henderson and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino.
With the show's record ratings, soaring popularity and high-profile spot on the pop culture grid, openly gay dancer Louis Van Amstel said he's got an idea that will keep things at a fever pitch for the show's upcoming 12th season.
"Bring in a same-sex couple," Van Amstel said. "Why not?"
