"He messed up big time," the Wall Street  star said of Cameron, who was sentenced to five years in prison on April 20 in connection with convictions on heroin possession and conspiracy to sell crystal meth. "He was a drug dealer, and crystal meth is one of the worst things that can happen."

Douglas said he thinks Cameron is "relieved" knowing the length of his sentence, and the road that lies ahead. He said that Cameron's public struggles mark one of the downsides of celebrity, as less famous offenders in similar predicaments wouldn’t receive the same fanfare.

The actor said he's also relieved the sentencing has passed, and thanked well-wishers for the sympathetic cards and letters he's received throughout this ordeal.

"I love him," Douglas said of Cameron. "He's a great kid."

The actor's new film, Solitary Man, is in theaters now.
