The extortion of stars who have affairs is at an all-time high, says one of Los Angeles’ top attorneys.
Marty Singer, who represents Bones star David Boreanaz and a roster of A-list clients, says the disturbing trend is on the rise.
Boreanaz announced Monday that he had an extra-marital affair rather than, he says, give in to financial demands from the woman.
But Boreanaz is simply the latest target, Singer told RadarOnline.com.
“This is not really a story about David Boreanaz, this is a story about how women who have sex with married men want to make a claim to get money and engage in extortion by threatening a public figure that unless they get paid they are going to go public with the story,” Singer said. “That’s what this is about.”
Jumping back to Boreanaz, he told RadarOnline.com: “At the end of the day my client decided he was not going to cave into an extortionist.
“David put his foot down and said, “I’m not going to cave in and I’m not going to negotiate with an extortionist and he wouldn’t pay her a dime.”
The unnamed woman is represented by Gloria Allred who strenuously disputes any and all allegations of extortion. and told RadarOnline.com: ”It is a typical line of many male celebrities to make that claim (about blackmail). There is no merit to it in this case. I do represent a woman who had a relationship with him. Now that he is attacking her, I do expect that she will want to tell the story of their relationship so that the truth will come out.”
But Singer says the public never hears about many of the cases that he calls extortion.
“There’s more you never hear about because either they get settled or they don’t go through with their threats,” he told RadarOnline.com.
“It can be a star, a politician or a business executive. We deal with a lot of people who are not in limelight. They range from people you know about to people you don’t.
“People are trying to extort others all the time, threatening to go to the spouse, to go to the media. But that’s not what the law is here to.protect, it’s to protect legitimate claims.”
As for Boreanaz, the Bones star did give the unnamed woman money twice and it was “not an insignificant amount,” Singer said. “Money was paid on two occasions.
“When she asked for big money he said no.”
