"Son of Sam" killer David Berkowitz is hopeful he will overcome his health struggles. After RadarOnline.com reported the serial killer is on his deathbed, his lawyer exclusively claimed the murderer is in "good spirits" despite his medical issues.

"He had a heart attack and he was taken to a hospital in Albany," Mark Jay Heller said of the December hospital stay. "Then he was treated and ultimately returned to the facility that he had been in."

The 64-year-old returned to the hospital for a procedure to drain fluid from his legs. A Public Information Officer for the prison confirmed to RadarOnline.com that he was "transferred to an outside hospital in January."

"He responded well," Heller said. "He's calm, peaceful and in good spirits."

Berkowitz, who is back in general prison population at Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, New York, believes he will make a full recovery.

"After the heart attack he seemed to be very hopeful," Heller explained. "He's a very, very spiritual individual. He firmly believes God is watching over him and protecting him from any ill fate."

Despite Berkowitz's positive outlook, a source previously told RadarOnline.com that the killer is "on his last legs."

"It doesn't look good at all," a source told RadarOnline.com. "He's been suffering with cardiac problems for a long time, and he's not bouncing back from his procedure. He doesn't have long. Death is expected imminently."
