Project Run Away! Nicole Richie & 'Unhappy' Husband Joel Madden Edge 'Closer Than Ever' To Divorce -- 'He Cannot Take It Anymore'

Nicole Richie and her Good Charlotte rocker husband Joel Madden have learned that The Simple Life is not so simple after-all, as a friend of the celebrity couple tells RadarOnline.com exclusively that they are "closer than ever" to divorcing.

Although the 33-year-old Project Runway and Madden, 36, were spotted together over the weekend looking incredibly unhappy following recent reports that their marriage was crumbling and, prior to the all for show outing, the two were not seen together in over a month.

"Nicole and Joel are going through a very tough time right now and their friends do not think that their marriage is going to survive," the source tells RadarOnline.com.

"Joel is saying that he cannot and that neither of them are happy when they are together."

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, the couple who got married in Dec. 2010 after dating for three years are at odds  over the future of their family and what will become of their two children together, Harlow, 8, and Sparrow, 4.

"Everyone is mainly concerned with their children and Joel has not been actively participating in their lives," the source says.

"Nicole, on the other hand, is always the one taking her kids to and from school, but she has lost even more weight and has not had a smile on her face for almost a year."
