A 27-story tower in west London, housing 600 people, went up in flames at 1:00 a.m. this morning, can confirm.

"We have a list of missing people — there are so many. It's possible there are more than 50, possibly hundreds," revealed the community leader responsible for locating Grenfell Tower victims.

At the height of the blaze, terrified residents were seen throwing themselves, along with their children, out of windows to avoid burning to death. Others tied bed sheets together to create ropes, or even used them as makeshift parachutes.

Those trapped in the tower — some of whom remain inside almost 12 hours later — were heard begging for their lives, waving towels, torches and mobile phones in hopes of alerting the 200 firefighters on site of their whereabouts.

Victims who managed to flee were forced to scramble over dead bodies to escape. According to survivors, the building had no working fire alarm, its sprinklers failed and the only staircase out was blocked.

It was "like hell on earth," one source said.

According to a witness, a baby was even tossed from the ninth or 10th floor of the building. Miraculously, a member of the public reportedly caught the infant, who only suffered some broken bones and bruises.

Police are still unable to confirm how many people are unaccounted for, since the building is still on fire, however there are real fears that nobody on the top three residential floors may have survived.

Story developing.
