Abby Sunderland, the Thousand Oaks, California, teenager attempting to become the youngest person to sail around the world solo, was located late Thursday. There was a fear she was missing at sea since she sent of a distress signal earlier in the day.
“She was fine,” Abby’s mother MaryAnne Sunderland told CNN. “She is running her heater and keeping warm” and “seems to be in good spirits.”
MaryAnne Sunderland said that a plane spotted her daughter’s ship in the Indian Ocean and subsequently found Abby about 2,000 miles southwest of Australia. According to the AP, a French rescue ship was en route to pick up Abby, who reportedly has food and water at her current whereabouts.
Abby, 16, set sail January 23 from Marina del Rey, California. Her father Laurence Sunderland told Australian media that Abby’s trip is over and she will be returning home.
