Will Smith said that persistence and self-improvement have been the keys to his marriage to wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
The superstar actor, asked by ET what the secret of the successful Hollywood union is, said, "We've been married 20 years and we've been asking ourselves that, and really, at the end of the day, it's just not quitting."
Will, 47, went into detail while on the red carpet of the Los Angeles premiere of his upcoming film, Concussion.
"You can't expect it to be easy: It's like our marriage was the most difficult, grueling, excruciating thing that we have ever taken on in our lives — and you know we're just not quitters."
The Philadelphia native said that he and the Gotham beauty "never went into working in our relationship," but rather "worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously."
The Men in Black star and his stunning wife, 44, have been a couple since 1995, getting married two years later in 1997.
The two continue to present a united front at the glitzy premiere Monday amid RadarOnline.com's exclusive report that the pair turned to Los Angeles fitness expert Darrell Foster for help with their longtime union, amid reports their relationship was crumbling under the weight of time and fame.
"He's a very positive guy and a good influence on them," sources said of Foster, "and they both credit him as a huge influence in saving their marriage."
Concussion, also starring Alec Baldwin and Luke Wilson, opens in theaters Christmas Day nationwide.
