Authorities Tuesday are investigation shocking cell phone video that shows a 22-month-old boy in Centralia, Washington briefly putting his mouth over a marijuana bong.
When police confronted the child’s mother, 24-year-old Rachelle Braaten, with the video, she reportedly told detectives, "Well, it was like, you can't see in the camera, but the person taking it, and then there was like a group of people there. And I guess it was a joke and a stupid mistake that wasn't really funny," according to komonews.com in Seattle.
Cops arrested Braaten, and she faces charges of manufacture of marijuana and delivery of a controlled substance to a minor.
She said the little boy’s demeanor didn't change after he took a hit, and he just continued playing after the shocking incident.
When asked how she felt, Braaten responde, "horrible."
"Because he's two, and he shouldn't have known about that," Braaten said. "He shouldn't have that in his body."
Police say they found 40 marijuana plants at the woman’s home. The boy's father, Braaten's fiance Tyler Lee, told authorities that he smoked marijuana for medicinal reasons. He too was arrested after allegedly confessing he also sold the marijuana to a dispensary.
Lee said he wasn't there when the boy unknowingly took a hit off the bong.
Lee was jailed over the weekend, but he was released Monday pending the filing of charges. As for Braaten, she remains in jail, held on $5,000 bail.
Child protective services took Braaten's boy and placed him protective care along with her 5-year-old child.
