Last night at the MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift presented Kanye West with the Video Vanguard Award in recognition of the controversial rapper's impressive body of work -- but according to a source close to Swift, the pop singer got way more than she bargained for when Kanye went off script and took things in a completely different direction from the one they had discussed!

Playing off of their rocky VMA history, MTV slated Swift to present Kanye with his award -- but not without a detailed plan! "They had agreed to his talking points as part of the agreement of her presenting the award," the insider told RadarOnline.com. "And then he went 'in a whole different direction.'"

As Kanye launched into his free-form acceptance speech, which included references to his status as one of music's most hated and misunderstood artists, as well his plans to run for president in 2020, Swift began to panic. With no chance at getting Kanye's speech back on plan, she and her handlers took action, starting with Swift getting the heck away from Kim Kardashian West! "She said she went into tunnel vision when he started going off script and that she tried to put distance between her and Kim," the source said. "Her publicist had them kill planned shots to her once he went off course."

But in the end, she had nothing to worry about. "(Swift) said 'it could have be worse' but luckily it wasn't about her even though he had agreed to apologize but didn't," the insider revealed.

Few can forget that moment at the 2009 MTV VMA's when Kanye shocked the world by interrupting Swift's Best Female Video acceptance speech, taking the stage to insist that Beyonce had been more deserving of the award. After the incident heard round the world, Swift capitalized on her role as the damsel in distress, using the newfound attention from fans across genres to catapult herself into her current position as one of the most dominant female voices in music. Indeed, this year Swift won Video Of The Year, with the source revealing that she knew about her victory in advance of the broadcast. Meanwhile, Kanye took a major hit to his public image following the incident, and has since struggled to shake the "bad guy" persona that has followed him -- even as he continues to flourish musically as well as in his new role as a fashion designer.

As RadarOnline.com has reported, Swift has not been without her own mean girl moments and scandals. The Bad Blood singer has been engaged in an ongoing feud with Katy Perry over an alleged case of stolen backup dancers. Additionally, Swift, a self-proclaimed girl-power guru, lashed out at Nicki Minaj after the rapper became vocal about the lack of recognition of women of color at mainstream award shows like the VMA's. However, Swift was quick to backtrack from her comments before engaging in a full-scale rap beef, and ended up joining Minaj onstage for the opening performance at last night's awards.
