Redmond O'Neal Denied Bail As Lawyer Claims Dad Ryan Is ‘In Very Poor Health'
The troubled son of Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett was denied bail on Friday and his family was a no show at the hearing as his lawyer claimed the troubled star's famous father is in "very poor health."
Redmond O'Neal will remain in jail as he waits for another court appearance where he will face felony charges for allegedly robbing a convenience store with a knife.
Redmond, who was dressed in dark blue jail garb, looked somber as he appeared before Commissioner Jerry B. Marshak on Friday, May 18 at a Los Angeles court regarding a probation violation for a 2016 case. His famous father, Ryan, and sister, Tatum, were not in the audience as Redmond faced the court.
Los Angeles Police officers arrested O’Neal, 33, on May 8 at about 3 a.m. after the celeb son allegedly approached a clerk and demanded money. The clerk, who was in fear for his life, gave Redmond the cash, a LAPD spokesperson told RadarOnline.com.
O’Neal is facing several felony charges, including second-degree robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a smoking device, possession of an injection/ingestion device and two counts of possessing a controlled substance, which were meth and heroin. O’Neal has denied all of the charges.
Robert Mendoza, of the Los Angeles County Public Defenders Office, asked the court on Friday to set bail for O’Neal regarding his alleged probation violation. Mendoza told Marshak that his client’s mother had passed away years ago and now his father “is in very poor health.” Mendoza said O’Neal is afraid his father might pass away while he is in custody.
Marshak denied the request to set bail, but without prejudice, which means O’Neil and his attorney can file a motion to request bail and make their argument again at a separate hearing. Bail was set at $125,000 regarding O’Neal’s charges from his May 8 arrest, but that was placed on hold because O'Neal violated his probation agreement from a 2016 case.
“My position is typically this courtroom is not procedurally appropriate for either side to conduct a full bail hearing, in terms of analyzing financial statement, financial capabilities, past court appearances…,” Marshak said. “All this court can do, on occasion, is order an OR (own recognisance) release for factors Mr.Medoza and The People are familiar with. … I don’t think it’s appropriate to do that on the fly without giving The People notice."
O’Neal has had multiple arrests, and spent a year in prison after being found guilty of drug charges. He had originally been sentenced to three years in prison for violating his probation in an ongoing drug possession case.
He struggled for years with his sobriety, and was released from prison in 2016.
O’Neal briefly addressed Marshak to clarify the court’s decision and nodded after Marshak told him he will have another opportunity to request bail at a May 30 hearing. O’Neal has another court appearance on July 10 for a hearing concerning his probation violation.
