David Letterman grilled Tuesday night’s guest, NBC News ace Brian Williams, over the scandals currently going down at the Peacock Network: the TODAY show's well-documented struggles, and the anticipated shake-up at the Tonight Show.

“Am I going to wake up in the shower?” Williams said. “Please tell me I’m going to wake up and it’s going to be morning, and I’m going to say ‘Hey! I’m doing Dave tonight and that was just a dream.'”

Letterman told Williams he thought the latest rumors coming out of Burbank -- that network execs are leaning on Jay Leno to step down to announce Jimmy Fallon as his successor beginning next year -- are a smokescreen to distract from the TODAY show's rapid decline in the ratings.

“If I’m on to something, blink twice,” Letterman told an uncomfortable Williams, who stayed silent about his network's issues.
