In a shocking never-before-heard interview before his tragic death, Cassidy himself admits that his alcoholism—brought upon by his depression and dark demons—is what caused his liver disease. Little did he know, it would eventually lead to his early demise.
I just met with the doctor and my liver… I have a liver disease. My life has changed dramatically," Cassidy says in an interview, months before his passing.
The first few days I was unconscious and near death. The last week or so my memory has come back. That's such a blessing. That means I'm cognizant of my surroundings. That I'm alive and it's daytime, and I know what day of the week it is," he happily continues.
As RadarOnline.com readers know, Cassidy began suffering from memory loss in his final years. He even began cutting down on his performances due to his declining health.
"There is no sign of me having dementia at this stage of my life. It was complete alcohol poisoning. And the fact is I lied about my drinking," says the performer in the newly-released interview.
RadarOnline.com previously reported that Cassidy admitted to being "in denial" about his dementia, but eventually said he "knew this was coming."
"The head doctor at the hospital, she said, 'I believe your dementia was directly related to your alcoholism,'" confesses Cassidy to his interviewer in the clip.
"You know… I did it to myself, man. I did it to myself to cover up the sadness and the emptiness," he adds.
Readers know that behind Cassidy's boozing and hard-partying lifestyle, he hid a tragic family life. For years, up until his death, the star had a troubled and estranged relationship with his famous daughter, Katie Cassidy.
After David Cassidy's death, the 31-year-old actress revealed her father's sad last words: "so much wasted time."
