Burt’s high school sweetheart, Ann Scurry, 82, who remained a close friend until his death from pa heart attack, said: “It’s been a very sad week, the funeral service is a small, private, affair and then the family have talked about scattering his ashes in the sea.”

Expected at the service alongside Ann are Burt’s niece Nancy Lee Hess, who is executor of his estate, and his only son Quinton, with whom he had healed a rift shortly before his death after decades of feuding with former spouse Loni Anderson.

Ann – who last saw Burt less than a month before his passing – described him as the love of her life.

Describing Burt’s desperation in his final months, she said: “He was lonely, he used to call me all the time and at all hours of the night. One night he called me every half hour, from nine p.m. on, all through the night. We’d talk for hours, really talk.

“We were good friends, we still went for lunch together regularly. He had the greatest sense of humor, he was the love of my life. I was supposed to see him next week.

“Burt he was ready to go. He had become very frail and sometimes I wasn’t sure if his mind was right, he’d say things that were a little funny.”

Ann told how her first husband was insanely jealous of the Smokey and the Bandit star and banned her from seeing his movies, talking to him on the phone or being friends with him. But after they split, Burt came back on the scene.

“My second husband, Mathew, encouraged me. He liked that we were friends, it was very broad minded of him,” added Ann, describing how her second husband had also grown up in the same Florida community as herself and Burt.

Ann had many kind words for her lover, saying he was “magnificent, dynamic and had such a sense of humor.

“Even when we weren’t together he was always still back there. Even years later, I’d hear his name and my heart would beat faster.

“The feelings were still there. It was great that we reunited,” she added.
