Kilmer celebrated his 58th — and likely his last — birthday on New Year's Eve. Despite massive weight loss and needing a tracheal tube to help him breathe in 2015, Kilmer only recently admitted he was suffering from throat cancer.
"It seems once the cancer metastasizes, it's very hard to control — even with modern medicine," a source close to Kilmer. "But Val's a devout Christian Scientist who believes a cure is possible through prayer and healing rather than chemotherapy and radiation. He eventually got treatment, but he may have waited too long. His chances seem bleak."

Friends fear the cancer may have also spread to the Tombstone star's lymph nodes — which would open a floodgate for the disease to invade his weakened body. "Val can't speak clearly and his voice
is little more than a croak," the source noted.
"He's lost a lot of weight because he won't eat much. When his kids take him out to his favorite vegan restaurants, he'll only take a bite to eat to be polite," added the source.
The cancer has left the former movie stud incredibly weak and deteriorating by the day, according to insiders. He wears a heart monitor at all times and needs help to even take a few steps. "Val shuns the spotlight now," the source said. "When he goes out, he hunches over and hides behind his straggly hair. Sometimes he tosses his jacket over his head. He hates for anyone to see him as a shell of what he once was."
