Jan. 4 2019, Updated 10:22 a.m. ET
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s adopted son starts his days scrubbing foul fish guts off a boat deck and then works for peanuts filleting finny critters caught by tourists who have no idea he’s the son of Hollywood royalty! Connor Cruise, 23, has snubbed showbiz and jettisoned his career as a dance club DJ to work as a deep-sea fishing deckhand for 2 Shea Charters in Clearwater, Fla. Chain-smoking Connor starts his day at 5 a.m., heading out to sea with groups that pay $850 for six hours of angling. “Connor’s done some growing up these past few months and decided he doesn’t want to live his life spending his dad’s money,” a source told Radar. “He loves being out on the water, so this is really a dream job for him.”
Connor remains close to his Mission: Impossiblestar dad — and lives just a few miles from the global headquarters of the Church of Scientology, which claims Tom as one of its marquee members. But friends said Connor’s been estranged from Nicole ever since she divorced Tom in 2001. Although he has barely spoken to his mom in years, word has gotten back to Nicole her only son is carving a non-showbiz career for himself — and she’s thrilled
“Nicole hated that Connor was a club DJ. All she ever wanted for him was a normal, happy upbringing. It now looks like he’s finally found his way,” an insider said.
Although he’s getting his hands dirty at sea, Connor has not given up his privileged lifestyle. Thanks to his cult connection, Connor is regularly treated to five-star meals in the church’s ultra-private hotel, Fort Harrison. He’s also been seen speeding around town in his flashy yellow Mustang GT — which sources said was a $50,000 gift from Tom.
And he also owns a $500,000 boat!
“Connor knows his dad will give him anything he wants, and for a long time he took advantage of that,” said the source. “But he’s really surprised himself at how much he enjoys being relatively independent, thanks to his new job.”
