When Barack became a state Senator in 2004, he has admitted that Michelle was unhappy with his time away from home — and she made it clear. “Leaning down to kiss Michelle goodbye in the morning, all I would get was a peck on the cheek,” he wrote in his 2006 book, The Audacity of Hope. “My wife’s anger toward me seemed barely contained.”

During a 2004 campaign trip in Illinois, Barack was called away from a planned family RV trip, leaving Michelle livid. The Chicago Tribune’s David Mendell, who covered the trip, said, “The tension between Michelle and her husband was palpable.

During the First Lady’s recent trip to China, a staffer at the Westin Beijing Chaoyang told reporters that Michelle and her guests were inconveniencing “pretty much everyone.” The staffer complained, “We can’t wait for this to be over, to tell you the truth. We entertain many important people here, but this has been, I think, very different.”
