Authorities are still working to determine whether or not Mateen has ties to ISIS.
Mateen's father has spoken out, insisting that his son's crimes had nothing to do with his religion.
Rather, he says his son's rage was sparked when he saw two men kissing months ago.
RadarOnline.com has learned that the FBI had previously named Mateen as a person of interest back in 2013.
Nonetheless, Mateem had no apparent criminal record, an worked as a security contractor for the feds.
The stunning loss of life has led once again to calls for increased gun control.
"The shooter was apparently armed with a handgun and a powerful assault rifle," President Obama said in a statement. "This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school or in a house of worship or a movie theatre or in a nightclub. We have to decide if that's the kind of country we want to be. To actively do nothing is a decision as well."
