It might be surprising how many celebs choose not to drive, especially since so many A-listers live in California where cars are the ultimate status symbol.

1. Tina Fey

Like many New Yorkers, the Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock alum allowed her driver’s license to lapse and claims she has since forgotten how to drive. As Fey told Jerry Seinfeld on his Netflix show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, she accidentally forgot to shift a car into park while filming a commercial and nearly ran herself over. This doesn’t explain why she can still be seen driving Dean Winters in multiple ads for Allstate’s “Drivewise” insurance.

2. Cardi B

Thankfully, Cardi B sat in the passenger seat when she appeared on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke since she never passed her driving test — although she did try to pass the test during her appearance on Corden’s popular show. The rapper still reportedly keeps a garage full of expensive cars, mainly to take pictures with them for social media.

The Oscar-nominated star of the thriller Promising Young Woman and The Great Gatsby confessed to Jimmy Kimmel that she took her U.K. driving test five times and never passed, although she claims to be an “excellent driver.” Even more amusing is that Mulligan also appeared in a movie called Drive.

4. Christina Aguilera

The multiple Grammy winner and former The Voice judge is another music biz icon who has a driver’s license but opts not to drive herself. As Aguilera told Jimmy Kimmel in 2011, “I am terrified of driving in L.A. with paparazzi, running them over, you hear stories." In December 2009, Aguilera did get into a car accident, but she was just a passenger at the time.

Another Grammy-winning singer with a garage full of cars she can’t drive is Mariah Carey — some of the more expensive ones were gifted to her by ex-husband Nick Cannon. Carey prefers the luxury of having someone else drive her around in those cars since she admittedly isn’t a very good driver. As Carey wrote on Twitter after her own 2009 L.A. fender bender, “Ok, so this is why I don’t drive, or get up early. Just got into a little car accident in la ... but we’re all ok. Neither of us were driving.”

6. Jennifer Lopez

Maybe a prerequisite for being a pop diva is to never have to get behind the wheel. Jennifer Lopez is yet another award-winning singer who you may never see behind the steering wheel … unless it’s showing off her new $140,000 red Porsche given to her by Alex Rodriguez for her 50th birthday in 2019. This gift was given despite J.Lo having not driven in 25 years! 2019 was a pretty big year for the pop icon and actor what with Hustlers and her halftime performance at the 2020 Super Bowl. Still, Lopez made some time just before Christmas to show off the car in Miami.

7. Kate Beckinsale

Despite having lived in the United States for close to two decades, the London-born actor never got around to getting her driver’s license, or rather, she tried and failed. Having not passed the test, she still relies on ride-sharing, but in August 2016, Beckinsale posted a video on Instagram of herself being driven by her 16-year-old daughter, Lily. “I've never had anything spring out of my uterus and drive me around before. I need a second,” she joked.

In June 2017, a fan of the“Royals” singer took to Twitter to analyze Lorde’s songs and came to the conclusion that the 21-year-old didn’t drive. Lorde confirmed, “You're right! But I'm working on it, I have the book.” I guess we’ll have to wait until the New Zealand guest appears on Carpool Karaoke or Jimmy Kimmel’s show to find out if she managed to pass that driving test.

9. Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais is another comedian with no driver’s license and absolutely no intent or plan to get one. Like Tina Fey, Gervais appeared on Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and said he doesn’t care about cars either. One of the reasons why he turned down a chance to appear on the British racing show Top Gear was, "I don't drive, so I haven't bought a flash car," he told People Magazine.

Gervais’ fellow Brit, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran doesn’t drive. Unlike Gervais, he actually went on Top Gear in 2016 to let people know this fact. The show’s host Jeremy Clarkson addressed the elephant in the room ... that Sheeran had never been in the driver’s seat. Sheeran admitted that he said “yes” to doing the show because he thought “it would be funny the first time that I drive.” “This must be the first ever televised driving lesson,” the host joked. Like other celebs, Sheeran has bought cars as gifts and bonuses for his crew.

In 2014, Dunham confessed via Twitter, “To be clear: I can't drive and as I've aged it's gone from cute to pathetic to intriguing to tragic #strandedforlife.”

One might think that with all the money J.K. Rowling has accrued by writing the Harry Potter books, the Cursed Child play and two Fantastic Beasts films, she’d be able to buy herself a nice arsenal of cars. It would be a waste of good money though since she tweeted in October 2017, “Because I have no spatial awareness, can't work machinery & have a tenuous grasp on reality. It's really best for everyone I don't drive.”
