Though Lahouaiej Bouhlel was known to police because of past crimes, including violence and theft, he was not ever suspected of links to religious extremists prior to the shocking incident.
"He seemed very weird," one neighbor of the killer told The Telegraph. "He said very little to anyone and wasn't very polite. He wouldn't hold the door open for you."
In March, Lahouaiej Bouhlel made a court appearance. In an ominous hint into his character, a judge found Lahouaiej Bouhlel guilty of violent behavior. "He kept himself to himself but would always rant about his wife," a neighbor of the terrorist told a French TV station. "He had marital problems and would tell people in the local cafe. He scared my children."
Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who was once convicted of domestic violence, was in the process of splitting with his wife. He chose the Promenade des Anglais in Nice to commit his unspeakable crimes.
Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who is reportedly the father of three, had stocked grenades and other weapons in the truck used to run over revelers. Police shot dead Lahouaiej Bouhlel after the truck attack.
