Bourdain, 61, died at the scenic Le Chambard Hotel in beautiful Kayserberg, France.
The chef was filming an episode for his CNN show Parts Unknown just before he took his own life.
Popular Bourdain hanged himself inside one of the hotel’s rooms that cost between $260 and $425 a night.
Tragically his close friend, Éric Ripert, owner of New York's renowned restaurant Le Bernardin, found him dead inside his room.
Bourdain’s girlfriend actress Asia Argento has been left ‘devastated’ by the news.
The former drugs user ominously bought a painting last week called: 'The sky is falling, I am learning to live with it'.
The respected chef and critic leaves behind his 11-year-old daughter, Ariane, and was married twice to Ottavia Busia and Nancy Putkoski.
Bourdain backed Argento when she went public about her alleged abuse at the hands of Harvey Weinstein. Bourdain praised her on Twitter, writing: 'I am proud and honored to know you. You just did the hardest thing in the world.'
Christian De Rocquigny du Fayel, a prosecutor in the town of Colmar, confirmed Bourdain's death and said local law enforcement is investigating.
“At this stage nothing suggests the involvement of a third party,” the French prosecutor said. He revealed that a doctor at the scene had confirmed Bourdain’s death by hanging. Paramedics made efforts to revive him before he was pronounced dead inside the hotel.
