In a letter to top members of Congress, FBI Director James Comey wrote that the bureau has "learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation," after messages surfaced through an unrelated case into illicit text messages Weiner allegedly sent to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina.

According to the New York Times, senior law enforcement officials said that it was unclear if any of the emails were from Clinton's private server.

"In previous congressional testimony, I referred to the fact that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had completed its investigation of former Secretary Clinton's personal server. Due to recent developments, I am writing to supplement my previous testimony," Comey announced on Friday. "I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to asses their importance to our investigation ."

According to TODAY's Pete Williams, "The investigation is a top priority now for the FBI and while it could take weeks, officials say there is some chance it could be over quickly."

As for the investigation proceedings, authorities will reportedly narrow the emails down to Clinton's time spent as secretary of state, weeding out any duplicates from the previous probe using specialty search software and combing through for classified information.

In their initial review of the laptop, investigators discovered many messages (allegedly in the thousands) that were either sent to or from the private email server at Clinton's home during the time in question, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Clinton addressed the scandal during a rally in Florida on Saturday afternoon, slamming the FBI director's announcement "unprecedented" and "deeply troubling," ABC News reports.
