Stars dressed to the nines for the 50th annual NAACP Image Awards on Saturday March 30, 2019 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
The ceremony was tinged with controversy as well as style. In one awkward moment, while on stage to present the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, Chris Rock threw some shade on disgraced Empire actor Jussie Smollett.
"They said 'No Jussie Smollett jokes,' " said Rock. "What a waste of light skin. Do you know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be out of here! I'd be running Hollywood."
As Radar reported, charges against Smollett for an alleged hate crime hoax were just dropped, but he wasn't far from the minds of the NAACP show actors.
"What the hell was he thinking? You're 'Jessie' from now on," Rock said. "You don't get the 'u' no more. That 'u' was respect. You ain't getting no respect from me!"
Black-ish took home that particular award, but in an acceptance speech, Yara Shahidi supported Smollett, saying , "I stand with Jussie."
As PageSix reported, Lena Waithe stood up for Smollett as well, saying, "being queer and black is like having a target on your back every time you walk out the door."
The Empire actor was axed from the last two episodes of the show following his arrest, but his earlier work earned him a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He lost to Grey's Anatomy star Jesse Williams.
Other winners of the night included co-star Taraji P. Henson, who won Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her role as Empire's Cookie, Jay Z, who received the President's Award for his public service achievements and Rep. Waters, who won the Chairman's award. Black Panther won Outstanding Motion Picture, Tracee Ellis Ross who won Best Actress in A Comedy Series, Power won Outstanding Drama, and Beyonce took home Entertainer of the Year.
During the show, fans saw a jaw-dropping array of fashion finery.

Lupita Nyongo : Sheesh! Talk about gorgeous. The star of Us, Jordan Peele's horror film, looked stunning in her burgundy off the shoulder dress. She showed off a little leg wearing this Giambattista Valli look.
Michael B. Jordan wore a nude colored Burberry design to the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday. It was a great look to celebrate his win for Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special for his role in Fahrenheit 451 and outstanding motion picture for Black Panther.
Larenz Tate: There's nothing sexier than a man in black. Furthermore, Larenz is good looking and the fit of suit is just right!
Angela Rye is beautiful, but her dress...not so much! She sinks in the multicolored dress and the placement of the knot is just weird!
There's not much wrong with Ericka Alexander's light blue dress, but it's just too simple for an event like the NAACP Image Awards and very much easy to forget.
Danielle Brooks showcased a kente cloth printed LavieByCK look to the Awards. What better way to celebrate people of color than wearing African-inspired pieces?
Does Lena Waithe ever not look cool? The Chi star radiated chic, wearing a black turtleneck, pants and shoes, and finishing her look off with a green printed tuxedo. Her outfit was custom designed by GrayScaleIC.
Kate Beckinsale wore a Julien Macdonald design to the NAACP Image Awards. While her nude and black dress isn't the worst, it definitely it isn't the best. The dress' silhouette doesn't isn't at all flattering for her body type.
Chrissy Metz became a star on NBC's This Is Us, but this dress sure doesn't do anything for her. Her black and white off the shoulder dress could have passed, but the strange gold embellishment throws the entire outfit off. Plus, it appears too casual.
Black Panther star Letitia Wright might have brought home the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Breakthrough Role in a Motion Picture, but her dress missed the mark. The sheer number was worn over black and silver undergarments designed by Georges Chakra.
Cynthia Erivo wore Mario Dice to the NAACP awards Between the ruffles and the lace, it just didn't fare well in comparison to some of the other looks of the night.
Tracee Ellis Ross: The Black Ish star is usually known for fashionable looks, but her attire at the awards show seems funny instead of high end. Her ruffled black and white polka dot is a Marc Jacobs design from his 2019, but it's too clownish.
