Stars dressed to the nines for the 50th annual NAACP Image Awards on Saturday March 30, 2019 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
The ceremony was tinged with controversy as well as style. In one awkward moment, while on stage to present the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, Chris Rock threw some shade on disgraced Empire actor Jussie Smollett.
"They said 'No Jussie Smollett jokes,' " said Rock. "What a waste of light skin. Do you know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be out of here! I'd be running Hollywood."
As RadarOnline.com reported, charges against Smollett for an alleged hate crime hoax were just dropped, but he wasn't far from the minds of the NAACP show actors.
"What the hell was he thinking? You're 'Jessie' from now on," Rock said. "You don't get the 'u' no more. That 'u' was respect. You ain't getting no respect from me!"
Black-ish took home that particular award, but in an acceptance speech, Yara Shahidi supported Smollett, saying , "I stand with Jussie."
As PageSix reported, Lena Waithe stood up for Smollett as well, saying, "being queer and black is like having a target on your back every time you walk out the door."
The Empire actor was axed from the last two episodes of the show following his arrest, but his earlier work earned him a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He lost to Grey's Anatomy star Jesse Williams.
Other winners of the night included co-star Taraji P. Henson, who won Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her role as Empire's Cookie, Jay Z, who received the President's Award for his public service achievements and Rep. Waters, who won the Chairman's award. Black Panther won Outstanding Motion Picture, Tracee Ellis Ross who won Best Actress in A Comedy Series, Power won Outstanding Drama, and Beyonce took home Entertainer of the Year.
During the show, fans saw a jaw-dropping array of fashion finery.
