Dakota Fanning has been acting since the age of 6, appearing in movies opposite Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Robert De Niro, Denzel Washington and others before starring in the Emmy-nominated period drama The Alienist with Luke Evans and Daniel Bruhl. She also played the notorious Squeaky Fromme in Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-nominated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019.

Fanning joined Instagram in March of 2016 and proceeded to build a following of 2.9 million fans with her mix of professional pics, photos with friends and pets and also a lot of truly candid selfies. Instagram has helped turn Fanning into a style icon with her varied fashion choices, many which she’s shown off in IG selfies.

Rabbit Rabbit!
2016 was Fanning’s first year on the popular photo-sharing app, and it was a particularly busy one for selfies. This post from March allowed Fanning to play with filters like this Easter-related one, which she would repeat a few years later for her 2018 Easter pic.
Check Out the Shades!
A selfie from April 2016 found the actress in a pair of cool Miu Miu Wink sunglasses. In early 2016, Fanning appeared in a number of photos around New York City, always wearing a different pair of shades. (She is a fashion icon after all!) This selfie also began Fanning’s habit of sticking her tongue out in selfies.
Eyes See You!
In April 2016, Fanning took another selfie wearing a cool cap while on one of her regular trips to Los Angeles. Although soon after taking this, she would be back in New York for the annual Met Gala.
A More Serious Selfie
Fanning shared a far more alluring selfie in May of 2016, proclaiming: “?When your eyes, choker puffs and shirt match?” There isn’t a ton of context to this post except that Fanning was seen out and about in New York … wearing different shades each time.
This is just one of a number of IG pics that featured Fanning with her furry friends. In this case, the “cotton ball” was named Lewellen, which is oddly the same as the name of Fanning’s character in the controversial 2007 drama, Hounddog. Fanning was also seen regularly walking a black pug.
Greetings from Miami!
“Miami, it was nice to meet you and you will be seeing lots of me in the future,” was Fanning’s message in June 2016 while wearing a fetching green dress. We have no idea what she was doing in Miami or what that cryptic message means, so we can assume maybe she was filming something in Florida?
Summer Sips!
Fanning was just hanging out for some “?summer sips?” when she shared this candid selfie as she sipped from a coconut. The actress was bouncing back and forth between New York and Los Angeles a lot during the summer of 2016.
Dakota in Red
Fanning's tongue was back out in September of 2016 when she took this selfie modeling an elegant red dress she had worn the night before at a Hollywood Foreign Press party at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Fanning was at TIFF for the premiere of Ewan McGregor’s American Pastoral, in which she costarred.
French Feline Fashion!
Fanning said “au revoir” to Paris where she had been for Paris Fashion Week in between festival appearances for American Pastoral. Her chic ripped trench and black jeans look complimented another one of Fanning’s fluffy friends, named Cleopatre.
Voting Day!
It was election day in November 2016, and Fanning showed off her “I Voted” sticker on that infamous tongue we had seen so much on her Instagram feed. A few nights earlier, Fanning attended the opening of the posthumous Anton Yelchin photography exhibit at Other, and she’d remain in Los Angeles for a few more days.
Too far from the Mirror?
Fanning’s raciest Instagram shot to date came in December 2016. Dakota's sister Elle took a picture of her sitting on the bathroom sink wearing nothing but a thong as she applied makeup. The reason? “Too far from the mirror? Get in the sink.”
Birthday Unicorn!
Fanning celebrated her 23rd birthday in February of 2017 with a different kind of animal, a balloon unicorn she made herself. “This balloon kween (who I just made) encapsulates my birthday mood. #goldenbirthday #23onthe23rdwudup”

A Banging Tuesday Night
In April 2017, Fanning took another candid selfie before hitting the hay with the thought, “Forever bruised knee caps, Mario Badescu pimple cream and a semi-sexy colonial nightgown = A BANGING TUESDAY NIGHT.” Less than a month later, Fanning would appear at the TV Upfronts in New York for The Alienist.
Lovin’ “Lon Don”
Fanning was back in London aka “Lon Don” in July 2017 showing off a sheer pink blouse and enjoying a cocktail a few days after she had been seen attending Wimbledon. “??#whisperingangel #spiritdrink#rosévibez ??
Pimpin’ for Save the Children
In a rare selfie video in October 2017, Fanning pimped the Gabriela Hearst handbag collection that would be selling online to raise awareness for famine relief. Just two weeks later, Fanning would be back at Save the Children’s annual gala, helping to promote one of the actresses' preferred charities.
After a short respite from the selfies, Fanning posted a less glamorous shot in March 2018 while relaxing and getting a facial for a very special day. “Taking care of myself on this #internationalwomensday All ladies should do the same! We work hard ??”
With Cherries on Top
In June 2018, Fanning showed off a print dress covered in cherries in her first summer selfie of the year. This shot was taken just a few weeks after her table read for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and after appearing in Variety with fellow child star Freddie Highmore in a special “Actors on Acting” feature where she said, “I feel like I have to defend my life … you’re walking this line of defending yourself, but not too much, because I don’t have anything to defend.”
Too Much Lewk?
We don’t have a lot of context for Fanning’s “lewk” from September 2018, except that it was taken two days after Fanning attended the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards where The Alienist was nominated for “Outstanding Limited Series.” She happened to be in Venice for the annual film festival and the “Jaeger-LeCoultre Gala Dinner."
Sparkly Sweater Selfie
In October 2018, Fanning was showing off a “sparkly sweater” with no real context except that she seemed to be doing a ton of traveling at the end of 2018.
Strike A Pose
In November 2018, Fanning showed off a green dress and lamented her natural blonde hair coming through after having a redder tint for much of the year. “?I miss my red hair?”, she posted.
Weary World Traveller
As November 2018 came to an end, Fanning’s travels over the previous few months finally caught up with her. She shared, “How I felt after a 24hr. travel day. A little spotty, eyes a little wonky, hair a little greasy, but still cute ?” A few weeks later, The Alienist would receive a Golden Globe nomination just as Fanning would be in Ethiopia starring in her next movie, Sweetness in the Belly.
“What’s More Offensive?”
“What’s more offensive, the toilet in the bg or my pants with different waistbands?” Fanning asked in her first selfie of 2019, referring to the odd blue jean waistband countering her otherwise black outfit. “I love them very much and will continue wearing them even though they make some uncomfortable,” she added unapologetically.
Valentine Vibes
The day after Valentine’s Day in 2019, Fanning was “Keeping the Valentine Vibes going over here ?” in a chill black and pink sweater. At this time, Fanning had been dating fellow New Yorker Henry Frye for a couple years, so hopefully he did something special for his gal a day earlier.
Fashionable Faux Pas
In early September 2019, Fanning shared a dry cleaning faux pas with “Before the dry cleaners shrunk my sweater, more of a crop top now. ??♀️” A few days later, she was defending her casting as a white Muslim Ethiopian in the movie Sweetness in the Belly, which debuted a clip before its Toronto International Film Festival debut.
Sleeping Infraction
Fanning’s early February 2020 selfie may not need much explanation. Clearly, someone or something disturbed her sleep. “How I feel about waking up at 5:15am without my consent. ?,” she stated. Earlier in January, Fanning attended the 2020 Screen Actors Guild awards, nominated as part of the cast for Tarantino’s film. It had been 18 years since she was nominated for her supporting role in 2002’s I Am Sam ... at just age seven.
