Angelina Jolie stepped out at the Cambodia Film Festival last weekend, revealing a brand new tattoo on her frighteningly frail forearm –– get the scoop on her latest ink.

The 40-year-old, who's been looking extra frail these days, arrived at the Cambodia Film Festival in Phnom Penh last weekend, debuting a new tattoo on her left forearm.

"It looks Cambodian…it could also be Thai or Lao but since she was in Cambodia and has a connection with Cambodia it's probably Khmer," expert Anne Hansen, Professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison and religion historian, noted of Angie's ink. "The design looks like a typical Cambodian Buddhist tattoo."

"The purpose of the tattoo is protection –– the overall style of it," Judy Ledgerwood, Anthropology and Southeast Asian professor at Northern Illinois University, weighed in. "The Cambodians have many tattoos that are designed to make your body impenetrable. Many men who fought in various wars would get these things to protect them when they go into battle."

While RadarOnline.com experts couldn't make out the exact symbols Jolie was sporting, they noted that the actress' new tattoo was likely a mantra. "Different designs are used for different reasons depending on what the person is there for –– what they need help with or the problem they're tying to solve. Sometimes people use them as protective talismans an object which is believed to contain certain magical or sacramental properties," Hansen explained. "They might use them when they're starting a new venture."

A new venture could be a likely reason! Jolie and her brood –– Shiloh, Maddox and Pax Jolie-Pitt –– were later spotted boarding a plane from Cambodia, where the star has been working on her latest film project.
