Renowned actor Donald Sutherland has died at age 88, RadarOnline.com has learned.

The Hunger Games star's son, Kiefer Sutherland, announced his father's death on Thursday.

Donald was 88-years-old.

Kiefer paid tribute to his father in an emotional X post.

"With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," Kiefer wrote. "I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

Donald is said to have passed away following a "long illness" in Miami, Florida, according to The Creative Artists Agency per NBC News. The actor's agency did not specify the illness.

The legendary actor captivated audiences for over seven decades, starring in hit films including 1967's The Dirty Dozen and 1970's M*A*S*H, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal as "Hawkeye" Pierce.

After cementing himself in film history, Donald continued to push career limits and charm new generation, becoming well-known for his portrayal of the villain Panem President Coriolanus Snow in the Hunger Games franchise opposite of Jennifer Lawrence.

The actor was additionally beloved for his roles in cult classics including 1978's Animal House with late comedian John Belushi, as well as the 2005 romantic drama Pride & Prejudice, in which he played Keira Knightley's loving on-screen father, Mr. Bennett.

Over the course of his acting career, Donald was nominated for and received numerous accolades and honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next to his son's.

His work in Citizen X earned him a Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actor in 1995. His second Golden Globe award came in 2002 for Best Supporting Actor in Path to War — and as recently as 2020, Donald won the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for The Undoing.

While Donald was shockingly never nominated for Oscar, he received an Honorary Academy Award in November 2017 at the Governors Awards.
