Congratulations? Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin looked like the dreamiest of newlyweds in Vogue’s March cover, but as it turns out, it’s not all Chanel bags and beach vacations for the young couple.
In their candid new interview, the stars told the magazine all about their life as a married couple — and it doesn’t sound great!
Though the two have been joined at the hip since saying “I do” in a courthouse this September, the model admitted: “Marriage is very hard.”
RadarOnline.com readers know she and the “What Do You Mean?” singer have known each other since they were children, but their relationship has been rocky for quite some time. Three years ago, they had a painful breakup, after which Bieber, 24, ran back to his other longtime love, Selena Gomez, and after that didn’t work out, rushed back to Baldwin, 22. He popped the question during a Bahamas getaway after just twelve weeks of dating. She said “Yes!” and the rest is history.
“It’s just that I’m fighting to do this the right way, to build a healthy relationship,” said Baldwin of her life as a newlywed. “I want people to know that. We’re coming from a really genuine place. But we’re two young people who are learning as we go. I’m not going to sit here and lie and say it’s all a magical fantasy. It’s always going to be hard.”
Bieber, apparently, feels very similar. Though his road manager, Ryan Good, said “Hailey is this force of calm. She is level,” Bieber still experiences severe trust issues.
“It’s been so hard for me to trust people, I’ve struggled with the feeling that people are using me or aren’t really there for me,” he said.
As RadarOnline.com reported, Bieber had to hire a church staffer to follow him around and keep him from cheating on Baldwin. He’s also recently been spotted crying uncontrollably in public and carrying self-help books about marriage! Plus, the couple admitted they've already attended couple’s therapy.
In their sit down interview, Baldwin and Bieber did not hold back on anything. Apart from discussing their marriage troubles, they spoke of their difficult past and their overwhelming differences. They also revealed they didn't have sex until after their wedding, as the pop prince was on a year-long celibacy streak.
The blonde stunner who is described by her friends as "calm" and "strong" has never touched a drug, and is devoted to her faith. Bieber, on the other hand, spent years being a womanizer, using hard drugs and partying until he could no longer keep himself up. All of this, he said, led to severe depression.
“I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed. My mom always said to treat women with respect. For me that was always in my head while I was doing it, so I could never enjoy it," said the singer. "Drugs put a screen between me and what I was doing. It got pretty dark. I think there were times when my security was coming in late at night to check my pulse and see if I was still breathing.”
Eventually, Bieber moved back home to New Jersey to undergo an unofficial detox. Though he was only there for a few weeks and still drinks alcohol socially, he said he hasn't touched a drug since.
"I’m really proud of him. To do it without a program, and to stick with it without a sober coach or AA or classes—I think it’s extraordinary. He is, in ways, a walking miracle," said Baldwin.
