Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell has just revealed the shocking news that she suffered a miscarriage—and fans didn't even know she had been pregnant.
Mitchell, 31, exposed her secret in a heartbreaking Instagram story post in which she said she "miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams."
She also posted a photo of the baby's sonogram with a broken heart emoji.
In her lengthy Instagram post Mitchell wrote on New Year's Day, "We all have to deal with various struggles and challenges in life. And sometimes it's easier to only showcase the good times on social media, which is what leads many people to criticize it for its lack of authenticity.
"Having so many people follow me on Instagram and read my posts is both incredibly humbling and hugely uplifting. The support and affection that so many of you show me lifts me up during even my darkest days, one of which happened last year after I miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams."
Mitchell didn't mention who the father of her baby was.
However, in 2018, she was seeing TV host boyfriend Matte Babel, 38.
They reportedly started dating the year before, and the two have taken vacations together and were spotted at a basketball game. Both are originally from Canada.
But Mitchell didn't talk about a significant other in her emotional New Year's post.
The pretty actress, who played lesbian character Emily on the ABC Family hit PPL, continued in her missive, "In the spirit of the new year, I think that we need to remember that we are all on this journey together—in good times and in bad—and to remind ourselves that we seldom really know or understand the struggles and hardships that other people are going through."
She urged fans to be compassionate as a resolution for 2019.
Her caring followers weighed in, telling her they were sorry for her loss.
