Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s alleged mistress testified against him this Thursday, at his New York trial, breaking down in tears when describing their intimate relationship.
Speaking to the jury, Lucero Guadalupe Sánchez López said she began her affair with the married drug lord in 2011. Though she helped smuggle marijuana for him, she alleged that the two were also intimate and romantic — a combination which made her uncomfortable.
“Until this day, I'm confused because I thought we were in a romantic relationship,” she said as El Chapo’s wife of over 10 years, Emma Coronel Aispuro, sat in the audience.
“Sometimes I loved him and sometimes I didn't,” continued Sánchez López, 29.
The alleged mistress — who ratted out the cartel boss in exchange for a reduced prison sentence — said she was “traumatized” when he forced her to escape one of his safe houses through a bathroom tunnel while he was still naked. She told the jury that they walked for about an hour in the dark to keep from being arrested by Mexican authorities.
Sánchez López cried and let out bizarre laughs during the trial, but seeing her meltdown, all Coronel Aispuro, 29, could do was snicker and smirk. When she left the Brooklyn federal court, El Chapo’s wife, and mother to his twin girls, smiled happily and even posed for photographers.
