Canales was reportedly 62 years old. One of his longtime friends and fellow makeup artists, Mary Greenwall, announced his passing in a touching tribute on her Instagram on Tuesday morning. Allure was the first to report the news.
"Oribe is one of the great 'original' hairdressers whose iconic status grew along side the supermodels of the 80' and 90'," she wrote. "He was a brilliant hairdresser and simply adored by all."
In the somber post, Greenwell added: "I am so sad you are gone our beautiful Oribe. The world of fashion and beauty has lost a great soul, and we will mourn that you have left us all behind while you have gone straight to heaven."
Canales was born in Cuba but he reportedly had homes in New York City and Miami.
Canales leaves a long legacy in the fashion and beauty industries. He is credited as the key hairstylist for Marc Jacobs' grunge collection in the early 1990s.
