Ryan O’Neal penned a letter regarding the mental state of his troubled son Redmond, who is still waiting on whether he must soon face attempted murder charges for allegedly critically-injuring two people, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively.

The famous actor’s son has been in a Los Angeles County jail since he was arrested in May 2018 for an alleged one-week crime spree in the Santa Monica and Venice areas. Prosecutors said they want to review the famous actor’s letter about his son, and also asked for another week to review hundreds of pages of documents regarding Redmond's psychological history.

The judge still has to decide whether or not Redmond is competent to stand trial after he reviews various reports from a psychiatrist, and hears arguments from both prosecutors and the 33-year-old's attorney.

Redmond faces more than 20 years in state prison for allegedly plunging a three-and-a-half inch knife into the head of one man, and striking another man with a broken glass bottle.

He also faces a second-degree robbery charge, possessing methamphetamine, exhibiting a deadly weapon and other charges in connection to the May 2018 crime spree.

During a hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Mental Heath Court in Los Angeles, the judge said has he received a report from Dr. Sanjay Sahgal.

Prosecutor Michael Stewart told the judge that the District Attorney’s Office would like to get access of documents listed in Sahgal’s report, including a letter written by Redmond's famous father, as well as his godmother and sister-in-law.

Stewart also asked for other documents, including over 200 pages of mental health records from the Department of State Hospitals, over 300 pages of mental health and medical records from the California Department of Corrections, over 200 pages of mental health and medical records from L.A. County Jail, mental health records from Redmond O’Neal's 2017 hospitalization at Las Encinas Mental Health Hospital, and notes from Sahgal’s one hour telephone convo with Redmond.

Redmond was not present at his hearing, but his attorney Nina Daly said she would turn over documents that do not infringe on his attorney-client privilege. Both sides are set to return to court next week to discuss the various documents.

Sources told RadarOnline.com that Redmond has refused to take medication prescribed by doctors, and that his days in jail are “spent pacing his cell, talking to himself, often loudly yelling.”

O'Neal is also facing a separate battery charge in connection to a April 20, 2018 incident at the Men's Central Jail in Downtown Los Angeles. According to prosecutors, Redmond allegedly attacked a healthcare professional who was trying to assist him. That case is also on hold until the judge decides on his competency to stand trial.
