Sara Gilbert Says She's 'Sad' About Shocking Cancellation Of ‘Roseanne’

Sara Gilbert is opening up about the sudden and shocking cancellation of her hit series, Roseanne, after star Roseanne Barr's racist comments last week.

“This has been a very difficult week. A lot of people have been hurt by this,” Gilbert, who played Darlene on the ABC revival, said Monday June 4, on her show The Talk. “I will say I’m proud of the show we made. This show has always been about diversity, love and inclusion. And it’s sad to see it end in this way.”

As RadarOnline.com readers know, the reboot of the 90’s hit was quickly axed in the wake of the controversy that swept the nation after series star Barr made racist comments on Twitter about former President Barack Obama‘s onetime aide, Valerie Jarrett.

Gilbert, 43, was not only a star on the show, but also served as an executive producer. She’s just one of hundreds of workers on the show who are suddenly unemployed.

“I’m sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process,” Gilbert added, fighting back tears. “However, I do stand behind the decision ABC made.”

As RadarOnline.com reported, producers and network execs have secretly met to determine what happens next for the beloved show. A leading candidate is to reboot the sitcom around Gilbert’s character, and retitle it, “Darlene.”

While Gilbert didn’t address that possibility, her co-hosts on The Talk did offer their own support and perspectives.

Sheryl Underwood said, “As a black woman who is a comedienne… I’m happy to see that it was done swiftly” while Julie Chen added, “Canceling the show so quickly sent a strong message and the right message.”
