After admitting to the world that he was HIV-positive following the National ENQUIRER’S bombshell reveal on Monday, Charlie Sheen wrote an open letter explaining the revelations behind his shocking diagnosis.
As RadarOnline.com previously reported, the 50-year-old said that he's known about his status for four years, but denied that his 2011 media blitz was fueled by the drugs he was doing during a battle with depression.
Sheen said in going public with his health drama, he hopes that he is "kicking the door open" for HIV awareness.
"Roughly four years ago, I suddenly found myself in the throws of a seismic and debilitating three-day cluster-migraine-like headache," the actor’s open letter, released on the TODAY Show website, read. "I was emergently hospitalized with what I believed to be a brain tumor or perhaps some unknown pathology. I was partially correct. Following a battery of endless tests, that included a hideous spinal tap, it was sadly and shockingly revealed to me that I was, in fact, positive for HIV."
Despite "brilliant and perfect" care from Dr. Robert Huizenga, Sheen said the shock of his health led to "personal disbelief."
"Shame and anger lead to a temporary yet abysmal descent into profound substance abuse and fathomless drinking," he wrote of the dark time following his diagnosis. "It was a suicide run. Problem was, I'd forgotten that I'm too tough for such a cowardly departure."
"In and around this perplexing and difficult time, I dazedly chose (or hired) the companionship of unsavory and insipid types," Sheen admitted. "Regardless of their salt-less reputations, I always lead with condoms and honesty when it came to my condition. Sadly, my truth soon became their treason, as a deluge of blackmail and extortion took center stage in this circus of deceit."
The former Two and a Half Men actor even confessed, as RadarOnline.com previously reported, paying out "countless millions to these desperate charlatans."
Now, Sheen could potentially face a criminal investigation after the National ENQUIRER revealed his shocking HIV cover-up.
