French President Francoise Hollande and the country's First Lady Valérie Trierweiler, have ended their longtime affair following allegations he cheated on her with actress Juliet Gayet.

"I have ended the life in common that I have shared with Valérie Trierweiler," Hollande said in a statement released Saturday.

The love triangle has been making front-page news around the world since a French magazine alleged the affair between Hollande and Gayet earlier this month.

Trierweiler checked herself into a hospital, citing "exhaustion" after the allegations -- which Hollande never denied -- went public.

She returned to France's presidential palace just outside of Paris in the village of Versailles earlier this week.  Conveniently, it seems, Gayet, lived just minutes away.

Trietweiler is believed to have left the the palace she shared with Hollande just before he released his statement.
