Lesser-known celebrity siblings such as Charlie Murphy, Solange Knowles and Frank Stallone have tried in vain to become big stars themselves, but Brad Pitt's brother Doug just might be onto something.
The younger sibling of the Moneyball hunk has put his name on the map with a viral Australian Virgin Mobile ad that takes a tongue-in-cheek twist on his mellow life, in contrast to the glitzy Hollywood existence his older brother lives.
"It's a little surreal, but it's fun," Doug said in an appearance on TODAY Monday. "This whole campaign was to be tongue in cheek and to have fun. And luckily, it's hit its mark."
Doug said he didn't expect the ad to air away from Australia, but then "all of a sudden I started getting calls. I panicked … but I'm thrilled with the response."
He said he received his A-list brother's blessing before cashing in on the family name.
"I did call him and said, 'Hey, what do you think?' He said, 'Do it. It sounds great!'" he said, adding Brad enjoyed his brother's small screen debut. "I was out riding my bike and stopped and got a text and it just said, 'Hey, just saw it. Hilarious.' So, I was pleased."
The father-of-three said for years, people thought he was Val Kilmer, and not his famous bro. He admitted the constant fawning over his A-list relation does get old at times.
"Honestly, my eyes glaze over," he said. "It's been these kinds of questions for a long, long time."
