Avatar (PG-13) (Released April 22):
James Cameron’s piece of box-office gold is now ready for viewing in earthly homes everywhere. The global hit stars rugged Aussie Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, a paraplegic military man sent to planet Pandora via a Na’vi avatar, and is expected to make nice with the locals so the humans can crush them more easily. Instead, he makes a little too nice with a sexy blue alien, and soon embarks on a life-changing mission to save the planet he now considers to be his own. (Sam Worthington Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana Neytiri)
Crazy Heart (R)
Washed-up country singer Bad Blake is on the booze train to nowhere when he meets a young single mom who inspires him to turn his life around. Of course, the road to redemption is never without its hurdles, and Blake’s is no different. Bonus: Colin Farrell plays the super-star protégé eclipsing his fading mentor, and actually sings on camera. (Jeff Bridges Bad Blake, Maggie Gyllenhaal Jean Craddock)
The Lovely Bones (R) Peter Jackson brings his aesthetic vision from Lord of the Rings to this less upbeat story about a girl who’s murdered and observes both her family and her killer from her liminal state between heaven and earth. As she watches her family mourn and subtly impacts their behavior, she must decide whether to take revenge through her father’s actions, or embrace peace for herself -- and for them. (Saoirse Ronan Susie Salmon, Mark Wahlberg Jack Salmon)
The Young Victoria (PG)
Growing up is hard to do, even for members of the royal family. The Young Victoria chronicles the 19th century ruler’s ascent to the throne, the great love she found for her own cousin (minus legal constraints), and the power struggle among her relatives, advisors, subjects and, yes, even her own husband, that she navigated before finding her stride as a leader, wife and woman in the public eye. (Emily Blunt Queen Victoria, Rupert Friend Prince Albert)
