Black was sparse at the 82nd Academy Awards, where muted metallic tones, rich blues and pretty pastels dominated the red carpet. Kristen Stewart looked smoldering in a midnight blue Monique Lhuillier, while Mo’Nique electrified in a bright, blue Tadashi Shoji and Mariah Carey grabbed attention in her blue Valentino.
Feminine ruffles and origami-like features were built into the elaborate gowns, which had mostly strapless and one-shouldered bodices.

While a few stars like Maggie Gyllenhaal and Nicole Richie rocked patterned gowns, the rest of Hollywood’s leading ladies opted for monochromatic looks. Zoe Saldana and Carey Mulligan both chose gowns which were shorter in the front and longer in the back, resulting in a dramatically modern feel.
