The Academy Awards is undeniably one of fashion’s most highly anticipated events of the year. Gorgeous couture gowns, which have only been spotted on the runway, make their way down the red carpet, modeled by Hollywood’s hottest stars. Over the years, there have been some pivotal moments in Oscar fashion, from Michelle William’s stunning, mustard-yellow Vera Wang in 2006 to Bjork’s shocking Marjan Pejoski swan dress. These are the ensembles which have made red carpet history.
Hilary Swank, who won the Oscar in 2000 for her impressive performance in Boys Don’t Cry, also claimed victory with the fashion critics, looking breathtaking in a metallic, olive green Randolph Duke. Three years later, the beauty flopped on the carpet, wearing a Christian Dior ensemble which featured a sheer overlay of pink tulle.
Reese Witherspoon usually plays it safe in timeless and tasteful couture, but slipped up in 2009 in an over-the-top, blue and black Rodarte gown. Another famous red carpet flub? Uma Thurman’s “Swiss Miss” Christian Lacroix gown in 2004.
What longtime Hollywood starlet decided to design her own ensemble for the show in 1986, resulting in one of the biggest red carpet disasters ever? Check out the gallery to find out.
