American Idol Tries Something Different This Week

Happy tears will be flowing on American Idol Tuesday, as a handful of semifinalists, in an unprecedented move, will be announced on the two-hour episode.

Here's the dealio: On Tuesday, the remaining contestants will take the stage to perform their final solo numbers in front of the judges; right after these performances, Simon, Randy, Kara and Ellen will deliberate, and for the first time in the show's nine-year history, will announce a portion of the Top 24 semifinalists.

Wednesday's episode will reveal the rest of the Hollywood-bound crooners, setting up the field of two-dozen hopefuls hoping to follow in the footsteps of Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson or Kelly Clarkson.

American Idol airs on Fox Tuesdays at 8/7c and Wednesdays at 9/8c.
