As expected, Where the Wild Things Are is the run-away winner at the box office this weekend. It brought in an estimated $32.5 million. Law Abiding Citizen with Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler grossed a respectable $21.2 million for second place. But the real winner for this weekend and perhaps the whole of 2009 is the third place flick, Paranormal Activity. Shot in 2006 for a mere $15,000 with a hand-held camera, it increased its tally by $20.1 million as word of the thriller spreads and prints get into more theaters. Fourth place went to Vince Vaughn's Couples Retreat which earned $17.9 million. The Stepfather had fifth place with $12.3 million.
The rest of the top 10: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - $8.1 million; Zombieland - $7.8 million; Toy Story/Toy Story 2 (3D) - $3 million; Surrogates - $1.9 million; The Invention of Lying - $1.9 million.
