Redmond O'Neal -- the troubled son of actor Ryan O'Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett -- should be released from jail and into a residential treatment program, according to a source close to O'Neal who spoke exclusively with

The source said: "Redmond has achieved as much progress as possible at the inmate rehab program, and it's time for him to be released to a residential treatment program."

The insider also tells us that a facility has been picked out in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California, where Redmond would continue to be treated by the same team that is working with him now.

O'Neal, 24, is currently in jail at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, California and has been in an intensive inmate rehab program for several months now.
