Madonna broke down in tears as she paid tribute to a pair of stage workers -- "The Two Charlies" -- who died building her show in Marseille, France on Thursday.

See video of the French authorities dealing with the aftermath of the collapse.

"Before I continue the show I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and pay tribute to two people who lost their lives today," the Material Girl said to her fans in Udine, Italy Thursday night. "You may have heard of it... When they were building my show in Marseille, where we're going next -- we don't know why, but one of the cranes fell... Two men lost their lives, it was a great tragedy to me."

The 'Live To Tell' singer continued with a sensitive, emotional send-off.

"I feel so, so devastated to be in any way associated with anyone suffering," she said. "Let's all just take a moment to say a prayer for The Two Charlies our hearts go out to their familes and loved ones... We are so blessed and lucky to be alive."

The singer canceled her scheduled performance Sunday in Marseille after the accident.
