It’s not a surprise, but it’s still dramatic.
It took Jon and Kate Gosselin 42 minutes of their reality show on Monday night to finally blurt out that they are splitting up, confirming RadarOnline.com’s exclusive report from last week detailing that the marriage is history.
“Kate and I have decided to separate,” Jon said when Jon & Kate Plus 8 returned from a commercial break, with an off camera voice questioning both members of the couple, who were filmed separately.
“Yes we have decided that we will separate,” Kate said immediately after Jon’s announcement.
RadarOnline.com reported earlier Monday that the couple took the first step to make their split official by filing legal papers and after Jon and Kate confirmed it on air, the TLC show flashed a black screen with white letters spelling it out. The screen read:
On Monday June 22, 2009 legal proceedings were initiated in Pennsylvania to dissolve the ten-year marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin.
The couple’s “big announcement,” which had been promoted by TLC since last week, finally was made after teasers had been inserted before every commercial break of the reality show, with Jon and Kate discussing their unhappiness without saying they were splitting.
Jon and Kate also revealed that Kate will stay in the house with the kids, and when it’s Jon’s turn to be with them he will stay in the house and Kate will go elsewhere. The show filmed separate interviews with the couple talking about their split, with Kate showing more outward emotion but both analyzing the situation and pledging to do everything possible to keep their kids from being devastated.
Hours before the legal papers were filed beginning the end of his marriage, Jon Gosselin told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive video interview Monday that he hadn’t seen his wife Kate in four days, didn’t know where she was or who she was with. He said he was treating Monday like any other day.

But Monday was far from any other day for Jon & Kate Plus 8. The televised announcement of the split was an odd crescendo for a show that has reaped record ratings by showcasing the reality of a bad marriage breaking apart. Jon and Kate’s estrangment has been increasingly evident. They did not spend Father’s Day or their 10th wedding anniversary together and Jon also has been romantically linked to several other women.

Jon admitted in a recent RadarOnline.com video interview that he still speaks to Deanna Hummell, with whom he reportedly had an affair with. Deanna’s brother told Us Weekly about the affair and said Jon had even slept at the house he shared with his sister.

But during Monday’s show Jon said about Kate: “I will always love her as the mother of my kids.” He also said: “I’m looking for friendship with Kate, I don’t have that right now. We’re just two people who live here.”
Not for much longer, though.
An emotional Kate revealed she has cried so much that “I need relief now. I need to turn the page.”
RadarOnline.com learned that the couple originally planned to split in mid July but moved up the date. Kate’s brother Kevin Kreider and sister-in-law Jodi told RadarOnline.com that Jon previously told them the marriage has been over for months.
