According to the Ocoee Florida Police Department, Brumfield said that the child hit her head after a fall. Brumfield said, after the accident, the child acted normally and ate bananas.
Brumfield later noticed the child was unresponsive, and the unidentified man called 911 and passed on their instructions to Brumfield.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they were unable to revive her. Records indicate authorities were called approximately two and a half hours after the incident.
According to the autopsy, the child suffered a fractured skull and subdural hematoma due to blunt head trauma.
Thornton's publicist, Arnold Robinson, said the Sling Blade star hasn't talked to Brumfield in "a substantial number of years." Her mother, Melissa Parish, divorced Thornton in 1978.
