Strapless couture gowns, and the divas who wore them, impressed on different continents last night, from the lights of the Big Apple to the red carpet in Cannes.

In New York, Renee Zellweger stunned in a dramatic smoked jacquard Carolina Herrera number. Milky beauty Anne Hathaway didn't wear Prada, but looked python chic all the same in a marvelous Proenza Schouler get-up. And Michelle Obama continued to bring her elegant, with-the-times fashion sense last seen in the White House during the days of Jackie O's pillbox hat. The first lady looked resplendent in a purple Isaac Mizrahi set.

Hilary Swank wowed in a gunmetal tiered gown in Cannes, reflecting her tough-yet-sexy aura.

Going less formal, but still chic --  Rihanna lived her life with a hip, downtown look, complementing her high forehead with high hair, a motorcycle jacket, and dunks in Manhattan. The Barbados beauty, just like in music, continues churning out fashion hits with style and grace, making her one of the foremost trendsetters of the times.
