Phillip Markoff, the accused Craigslist killer, is more than $130,000 in debt, according to court papers.
"Markoff stated he did not receive financial support from his family," a probation officer wrote April 23. "Markoff further stated he was unemployed for a lengthy period of time and was essentially living off of student loans in the amount of $130,000."
The high debt is not uncommon amongst medical students; Markoff was paying $1,400-a-month for a one-bedroom apartment in a luxury high-rise in Quincy, Mass., according to police.
The Boston University medical student has pleaded not guilty to accusations he killed Julissa Brisman, a 25-year-old New York masseur, and assaulted a prostitute. His attorney, John Salsberg, said he is innocent of the charges and "has his family's support." He is accused of robbing both victims, possibly to maintain his expensive lifestyle.
Markoff had a penchant for gambling at Foxwoods Resort, according to acquaintances. He was arrested last week on I-95 while en route to the establishment.
The casino and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation said in a statement that, while they do not publicly release info on patrons, they are aware of this situation and will cooperate with investigators in the case. (Photo: UPI / Landov)
