In a hush-hush operation worthy of the C.I.A., Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes recently rushed to the bedside of her grandmother Jackie Craft, who had just endured a serious operation.
The National Enquirer reports in its current issue that the 84 year-old had a leg amputated after undergoing surgery for colon cancer and was recuperating at Toledo's Flower Hospital.
"Katie was in the middle of starring in the Broadway play All My Sons, but she and Tom made an early morning visit to her grandmother in Ohio to show their love and support," an insider said.
"Katie and Jackie are very close, and her showing up out of the blue did wonders for her grandmother's spirits."
Craft had been at home recovering from the cancer operation when the lower of half of her right leg went totally numb. Fifteen years earlier, she'd broken her femur in a fall and had rods and pins inserted in the leg.
Being bed-ridden after the cancer surgery interfered with circulation in her leg and the doctors decided to amputate.
"Katie had been checking on her grandmother regularly, and when she finished the play one night in late October, Tom arranged for a private jet flight and they surprised Jackie in her hospital room," said the insider.
"Jackie was beyond thrilled. During the 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. visit, she and Katie prayed together for her quick and safe recovery.
"Katie had Jackie laughed to the point of tears while reminiscing about her childhood pranks and some of the thoughtful things her grandma had said and done.
"At one point, Katie even lay down in the bed with Jackie and told her over and over how much she loved her and admired her.
"It was very touching. Tom was very moved, and it brought a world of comfort to Jackie."
Craft, who is being fitted with a prosthetic leg, is expected to be walking within a few weeks.
The source added: "Katie says there's no holding her grandmother down!"
