The associate director of the graduate acting program Mark Alan Gordon asked Sommer to teach because of his great performances in Mad Men as advertising man Harry Crane.
"It's great when one of our students makes it," said Gordon.

One of Sommer's friends suggests that he might eventually teach for good when his show ends.
"Rich is a terrific actor, but he's also a natural teacher," a friend told The National Enquirer. "He'd be content teaching his craft to young people full time while taking on the occasional TV job or stage role."
His friend adds:
"He wants to help fledgling actors because he was in their shoes not long ago."
