Keanu Reeves explained why he jumped at the offer to play an alien in The Day the Earth Stood Still: he's a big science fiction fan.
The 44-year-old Reeves said that as a kid he loved the Star Wars films and also read novels such as Brave New World and 1984. Well, everyone sort of did that but Reeves managed to do more, starting with the sci-fi comedy Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, moving to Johnny Mnemonic and the blockbuster Matrix films.
Reeves is very proud of his new film, which opens today, saying that the remake of the classic speaks to modern audiences.
"It's about the world we live in and the destructive nature of man, so it gives you a lot to think about," Reeves said. "It's very timely."
He added: "It's also a suspense drama, and it hopes to entertain in a 'lets-go-to-the-movies-and-eat-popcorn way.'"
