BECAUSE SHE CAN'T SELL Regan, Bridie book (inset)
Judith Regan may be notorious in the publishing industry, but the rest of the world doesn't seem to care much about her. Because She Can, a dishy roman à clef by former Regan underling Bridie Clark, has sold only about 5,300 copies since it went on sale nearly two months ago, according to Nielsen BookScan. (The total sales figure is likely somewhat higher, as BookScan monitors only about 70 percent of retail outlets.)
Clark declined to comment, but a publishing insider notes, "That's very low considering all the promotion they put behind it." Certainly Warner Books, which published Because She Can, couldn't have asked for better timing: The book came out a mere six weeks after HarperCollins fired Regan, who had fallen out of favor after agreeing to publish O.J. Simpson's If I Did It. (We recently that settlement talks between Regan and News Corp. have broken down.)
